About the property

Care Access Real Estate’s (CARE) fourth property is located on a quiet residential street near a business corridor in Henderson, Nevada, making it convenient for many families. In CARE’s largest project to date, we transformed a 1970s-era entertainment room into a sunny, open space ideal for child care operations. The primary care area now boasts french doors leading to the large fenced backyard, and a new child care-friendly bathroom. This space is also adjacent to the kitchen, making it easy for Kathy to prep meals and snacks and also host cooking lessons.

About the provider

Growing up, Kathy’s mom had a child care business. As a young adult, Kathy worked as a corrections officer in both juvenile and adult facilities in the Midwest. After working with the Department of Corrections for 20 years, Kathy worked with pregnant teens and in various security jobs.

Kathy woke up one day temporarily unable to walk. She realized, “I didn’t want to go back to security.”

Her daughter-in-law, who lived in Ghana and was moving to South Africa, came with her children to visit Kathy. Caring for them during that visit sparked a new passion for child care in Kathy, who eventually got connected to CARE through the Las Vegas Urban League.

Kathy moved into the CARE home just before Thanksgiving 2023. “I have a power team behind me,” Kathy shares. “I have CARE. I have the Children’s Cabinet. I have Urban League. I have two coaches.”

Kathy enjoys the outdoor classroom in her new home and says, “I love my kitchen!” Having gone to school for industrial baking, she holds vegan cooking demonstrations for the children (and their parents) in her care. They also do arts and crafts, gardening, and crochet.

Kathy loves her new location and is committed to the community. “The neighbors are great, and my oldest daughter lives two main streets away,” says Kathy. “I’m going to make sure I’m available for whoever needs me here. I’m a granny on demand.”
