CARE House #9 (Shannon)
About the property
Care Access Real Estate’s (CARE) 9th property is a large single-story home in northwestern Las Vegas. The large interior child care space features a vaulted ceiling and is adjacent to an open kitchen and outdoor classroom area. The home’s layout can flexibly meet the needs of both the child care program and daily living, and the newly created fourth bedroom will be an ideal space to allow for privacy or fully integrate the provider’s child, who has medical needs and mobility challenges, into the program.
About the provider
Shannon moved from Southern California to Nevada in 2005. During her teen and college years, Shannon worked as a nanny and helped raise two sisters. A stay-at-home mom and foster parent, Shannon also used to run a group home for developmentally disabled men in Ramona, CA.
“I loved that job,” said Shannon. “It was amazing and challenging.”
Shannon’s son Brendan was in an accident in the summer of 2022, not long after she was connected with CARE through the Las Vegas Urban League and Wonderschool.
“Honestly, I wasn’t in the right headspace for my interview,” said Shannon. “But I knew my son would have wanted me to go for it.”
Shannon knew she needed a one-story home because of Brendan’s new long-term condition.
“I had so many butterflies touring the house,” said Shannon. “It was amazing. I heard their renovation plans, how great it was going to be for child care, and they took my son into consideration and made renovations to make it accessible for him too.”
The renovated home allows Shannon to run a child care business as well as tend to Brendan, whom she includes in programming throughout the day for both his benefit and the benefit of the children in her care.
“Brendan used to be a ‘baby whisperer’ before the accident,” Shannon said. “Children still love to interact with him even now. They know compassion before they are taught biases and judgment.”
