Empathy Care Group / Right at Home
What they do
Calvin Forbes entered the in-home care and assistance industry after an eight-year career on Wall Street. He wanted to enter a field that would allow him to make a meaningful impact on his clients. When presented with the opportunity to acquire the San Diego location of the Right at Home franchise network of in-home care services, he recalled the time he spent caring for his terminally ill mother in 2015—the days when caregivers from his church stepped in and allowed him to take a break from caregiving to simply be his mother’s son.
Recognizing that in-home care is important for many families and could be a way for him to realize his dream of owning his own business, Calvin co-founded Empathy Care Group in 2021 and acquired Right at Home San Diego.
“Our mission is to care for our community and allow as many people as possible to stay at home if they so choose,” says Calvin. “Every person deserves to age and grow with dignity, in the comfort of their own home. Our job is to help them do that.”
Through Right at Home, Empathy Care Group offers in-home care for those who are elderly and those with physical or developmental disabilities. The company has partnerships with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the Los Angeles LGBT Center, and the San Diego Regional Center.
Why we invested
Empathy Care Group acquired another Right at Home franchise location in Burbank, CA. Because of the company’s speed of growth, Calvin needed to access capital. Bank financing, however, wasn’t an option due to the relatively young age of the company. Empathy Care Group relied instead on online lenders. Our friends at Accessity referred Calvin to Mission Driven Finance, where we provided financing through the Advance Strategy.
